Your Spine and Your Immunity

Your Spine and Your Immunity Explained by Our Mississauga Chiropractors

With the irregular changes in weather lately, we’ve had several patients coming in for adjustments because they’ve been feeling sick. On top of that, now that Spring is upon us, allergies start to creep up along with the annoying symptoms that come with them. Through all of the illness and sensitivity, the truth of the matter is the health and alignment of your spine has an influence on the immune system. Most of this is influenced by the work of the autonomic nervous system, which has a direct relationship to the condition of the spine. When the spine is even slightly limited in movement, a cascade of events occur in the brain and autonomic nervous system, which has an immuno-SUPPRESIVE effect on the body. This means that your body’s ability to fight off infection and other diseases are weakened, both short term and long term. That’s why your Mississauga Chiropractors are experts in finding the subluxations in your spine that cause these negative changes and treating them with the necessary adjustments. They know their adjustments help improve immunity in a very significant way. As a result, patients have been experiencing less illnesses, infections and allergies by receiving adjustments from a chiropractor. The theory behind this has been better understood with recent research.

Benefits of Chiropractic Care For Your Immune System

A study from 2011 showed that those who received spinal adjustments increased a specific immune system protein called IgA. The concentration of this protein in the blood increased by 139% after an adjustment!  This in turn increases immunity and decreases the likelihood of infections. On top of this, it showed that adjustments increase circulation, lymphatic flow and cardiac output, which equips your body to respond faster to disease. This was also evident in a 2010 study where IgM and IgG levels (more immune proteins) were significantly higher post adjustment compared to control groups. Therefore, stronger immune systems!
Another study in 2004 showed that those who got spinal adjustments overcame immune-related illnesses compared to those who did not receive an adjustment. This study correlated that 98% of the subjects with dermatitis, allergies and asthma all had a spinal subluxation. Correction of spinal adjustments improved itching symptoms of chronic dermatitis by 88% and skin appearance by 72%. Those with dermatitis that didn’t receive an adjustment had NO IMPROVEMENT. Allergy symptoms improved in over 70% of the patients who received adjustments.
Chiropractors don’t specifically have the goal of treating these specific conditions, but the improvements in immune system are just a positive side-effect to the correction of spinal subluxations. These benefits are good for anyone with a spine, but are also very beneficial for children who are still growing and developing. A study dating back to the 1990s showed that the birth process created enough trauma to the spine, even in settings we would consider as natural, and would result in minor misalignments and fixations in the upper neck. This subluxation can impact their health, development and especially their immunity in a significant way. The biggest problem is that most subluxations move along undetected because they initially won’t cause any pain. This is why it’s important to get children checked by a chiropractor to make sure subluxations don’t affect their development or make them susceptible to illnesses, such as ear infections.
