The Pain of Frequent Flying

The Pain of Frequent Flying

Now that school is out, many families in Mississauga, Cooksville, Erin Mills, Meadowvale, and Streetsville have booked some unforgettable getaways to enjoy this summer. As exciting as it is to escape from our everyday lives, we have to realize the impact a plane ride can have on our bodies. Flying presents a number of health challenges that must be dealt with, especially for those who fly frequently or those who have to sit through long flights. Not only does the prolonged sitting have an effect on your health, but even the effects after, such as lack of sleep and jet lag, can add stress and subluxation to your spine. Here are some tips you can follow that will help you during and after a plane ride.

Tips from Our Mississauga Chiropractors to do during and after a Flight

Mental stress and physical tension can build up when we find ourselves in long lineups or if we’re rushing to get to the gate. The best thing to do is arrive early to the airport, and use the extra time to relax before your flight. This unwanted stress can add onto the effects the plane ride will have on your body.

When you’re on the plane, keep hydrated with water. The movement of the plane and the prolonged sitting can add extra shock to the spine, not only affecting the bones, but the discs as well. Discs need to be properly hydrated throughout the day, and so much more during moments of excess stress to the spine. Don’t be afraid to ask the flight attendants for water and don’t fear the frequent restroom visits. It’s always good to get up frequently anyways!

Prolonged sitting has very detrimental effects to our spine and overall health. Therefore, it’s best, even in a tight plane, to get up from your seat and walk around to change positions. You can also spend some time in your seat doing stretches and exercises to keep your muscles active and pumping blood. Do this frequently, especially on long flights.

Don’t forget to lift with your knees bent when you pick up your luggage. A long flight can often make us cranky and lazy, but you shouldn’t compromise your posture when lifting heavy loads. If necessary, ask someone to help grab them off the belt, especially with a heavy luggage. These are just some of the ways to make sure that your spine is in good shape after a long flight. Make sure to see your chiropractor before and after trips to relieve your spine from the stress and subluxations of traveling.
