With the beautiful weather lately, many of our patients have shared with us their recent experiences gardening at home. Although a lot of them have spent countless hours caring for their beautiful gardens, they have also expressed the aches and pains that come with it. Below is a list of tips to help make sure you’re prepared for a day in the sun and soil:
It’s always good to loosen up your joints and muscles before engaging them in strenuous activity. Even a short walk will help you warm up before you work.
Not only should you make sure you’re using the right tools for each job, but make sure that you’re using them in the right positions as well. As much as possible, keep a neutral back when working, and try to change positions often so you’re not straining your muscles. If you have to, move back and forth between tasks so you’re constantly changing positions. If you don’t know if a tool is right for the job, please consult with a specialist or the store you buy them from.
Whether you’re lifting bags of soil or bending with tools, make sure to use your knees rather than your back. Again, keep your back as neutral as possible, making sure to keep the load as close to your body. PLEASE AVOID TWISTING.
Many people like to get the job done quickly and all at once, but your spinal health may be at risk. Give yourself and your back a nice break. 2-3 breaks in an hour will do the trick and make sure to hydrate regularly, especially on a warm, sunny day.If you’d like more information about how your Mississauga Chiropractors can help you on your way to optimal spinal health and wellness, do not hesitate to contact us at (905) 821-4951 to book an appointment.
