Often enough when things get really busy and in the distraction of our busy lives, we find ourselves sitting down for long periods of time. As often as we do it, we need to realize that sitting is a sedentary activity, regardless of it being at work, in the car, or watching TV. Sitting for prolonged periods can cause a lot of strain on the spine, leading to further discomfort and pain.
The stress of prolonged sitting can affect the overall alignment of your spine, making you more susceptible to subluxation. Prolonged periods in this position can lead to early degeneration of the spine on top of the usual aches and pains that come with it. Recent studies have shown that prolonged sitting can actually lead to negative health outcomes. Some of these include chronic conditions including diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and cancer. Sitting has now become more than justa spinal issue, but has an effect on your overall health.
Sitting can be inevitable for a lot of us,but there are ways in which we can REDUCE the amount of time we spend sitting. For instance, if you find that you’re sitting down for more than 30 minutes at a time, take a couple minutes to stand up and move around, so that you can loosen tight muscles and give your spine a break from the loads of sitting. It would be good to also stretch your hip flexors at this time as well, which like to stay in a shortened position from prolonged sitting, and can cause extra “pull”on the spine when tight.
